My first time…

February 25, 2009

…I ever cried while watching the Oscars.

The ironing is delicious*:

If I loved Kate Winslet any more, I’d have to be put into a mental facility.

Andrea’s Top Ten Dreamy Geeks

December 16, 2008

Like I said in my previous post, I definitely am attracted to a certain kind of guy. I lurve smart, funny, creative, driven, passionate and accomplished guys. If you’ve ever met my husband, you know exactly what I’m talking about. He’s the funniest guy I’ve ever met, he can fix my Macbook and he knows all of the words to Jesus Christ Superstar. Dreamiest geek ever.

Before I get started on my list, let’s tackle this first: What’s the difference between a geek and a nerd? I actually did some research, and there isn’t one right answer. From what I could see, there are two schools of thought on this subject. 1) Some say that a geek is someone is obsessed with one or two specific things, like comic books or sci-fi movies or video games, and a nerd is passionate about learning and academics.   2)  A geek is interested in technology, sci-fi, video games and fantasy, but has good social skills and is relatively cool, and a nerd is smart but very socially awkward. I don’t really know where I stand on this issue, and I don’t care to debate it. Here’s my definition: a geek is someone who cares more about being smart and talented than being cool.

On that note, here is a list of my current favorite smart, very sexy geeks. (Click on his name for a little backgrounder if you need it) Read the rest of this entry ?

Very not boring – Search Engine

December 11, 2008

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a bit of a pop culture geek. Especially when it comes to TV and music. My brain automatically fills its holes with pretty useless crap like the real names of all the guys that played Darren on Bewitched or the name of Eddie Vedder’s theatre group before he was in Pearl Jam. Too bad I don’t know where my house keys are half the time.

Anyhoodle, when I want to purposely fill the holes with actual non-useless knowledge, I listen to my favorite new podcast – Search Engine, brought to you by your friends (and your tax money) at the CBC.

http://www.cbc.ca/searchengine/

It’s a terrific blog/podcast about internet culture in Canada. If you have a blog, check Facebook a couple times a day, get your news from the internet, have a preference between Mac or PC, have Googled yourself/potential date/ex partner, have complained about Hulu not being available in Canada, get emails on your phone, or have medium-sized knowledge about the internet, you will dig it. They discuss things like the impact of net neutrality on Canadian art, the mysterious disappearance of a well-known Iranian blogger and the correct pronunciation of “Wikipedia.” It’s not boring or intimidating and will get your brain whirring like an XBox 360 (how annoying is that when you’re trying to watch a movie). Another plus: the podcasts are only 15-20 minutes long, so you can throw one on your iPod and hear the whole thing on the way to the Skytrain.

Bonus – Jesse Brown, the host, is hella smart, funny and very charming. Last year, he started a strong and hilarious campaign to be nominated as The Greatest Canadian. He’s a cutie, non?
